Hi Everyone:

Thought this might be of interest:

In celebration of International Women's Day, Artistri presents the exhibition Beyond the silk road: Glimpses of contemporary textiles in Southeast Asia from March 7 to March 21. It will feature14 contemporary interpretations of the art of silk weaving by Cambodian and Laotian craftswomen. Suzanne Chabot, Director of the Museum of Costumes and Textiles of Quebec will inaugurate the exhibition at the official opening March 9 at 6 pm.

Since cloth-making became an important human activity some 20000 years ago, it has been women's work. Once considered an important skill for women, the significance of textile-creation diminished largely in connection with the industrial revolution, when what had once been considered a skilled craft became a task which could be accomplished by a machine. However, the fortunes of women and textiles continue to be inextricably bound together in much of the developing world, where the ability to weave is one of the most useful ones a woman can have. Nowhere is this more true than in places like Cambodia and Laos, where silk weaving is experiencing a revival after decades of civil strife and political antagonism, and women find themselves at the forefront not only of a self-conscious effort to preserve their cultural heritage, but also of a revival which represents a potentially significant revenue stream.

The vernissage of Beyond the silk road: Glimpses of contemporary textiles in Southeast Asia will take place at a 5 à 7 Tuesday March 9 at Artistri Atelier-Boutique—5319 Park Avenue, Montreal. All are welcome.
